Shelter is a basic human need crucial for survival in cases of natural hazards or conflict. It provides security, personal safety and protection from the weather, and prevents ill health and disease. Adequate housing provides people with dignity and the opportunity to lead a normal life.
According to the research, Children who live in poor accommodation for over a year are three times as likely to have mental health problems, including depression and anxiety, compared to their peers hence poor education and mental incapacity.
Living in poor housing affects women more than men. Research by NatCen and Shelter found that mothers were more likely to suffer clinical depression, and are more likely exposed to Gender Based Violence if they lived in bad housing.
In Kyaka Refugee Settlement, they are many vulnerable families living in high risk shelters and the situation is worse within this rainy season.
