Let’s Help International’s Commitment to Sustainable Change
Climate change, recognized as one of the most pressing challenges of our time, serves as a nexus amplifying threats to health, poverty, and hunger worldwide. Let’s Help International (LHI), guided by a steadfast commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), acknowledges the urgency of addressing climate change. LHI stands at the forefront of climate action, recognizing the intricate links between environmental challenges and social-economic issues.
LHI’s Role in Climate Change Tackling:
Let’s Help International actively engages in initiatives aimed at mitigating climate change effects and promoting sustainable practices. LHI’s approach centers around three pivotal pillars: Mitigation, Adaptation, and Empowerment.
1. Mitigation:
LHI strives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by championing renewable energy, promoting energy efficiency, and advocating for sustainable land management practices.
2. Adaptation:
Through infrastructure development, community education, and disaster preparedness programs, LHI is building resilience to the impacts of climate change, such as extreme weather events and rising sea levels.
3. Empowerment:
LHI is committed to enabling communities, with a special focus on vulnerable groups like women and children, to actively participate in climate action and address climate-related challenges.
Empowering Women for Sustainable Cooking in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement:
A concrete manifestation of LHI’s climate action is the collaborative project with SUN24 titled “Empowering Women for Sustainable Cooking in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement” in Kyegegwa District, Uganda, initiated in November 2023.
Project Overview:
This groundbreaking initiative addresses several intertwined challenges faced by women in the settlement:
- Environmental Degradation: Overdependence on firewood contributes to deforestation and soil erosion.
- Safety Concerns: Women face risks of injury and violence during firewood collection.
- Economic Vulnerability: The cost and sustainability issues of alternative fuels like charcoal.
Project Objectives:
- Train 200 Women Leaders:
- Equip women leaders with the knowledge to train and empower their communities.
- Provide Mold for Stove Production:
- Facilitate the production of energy-saving stoves in the community.
- Promote Sustainable Cooking Practices:
- Reduce the environmental impact of cooking practices.
- Improve the health and safety of women and children in the community.
The Energy-Saving Stoves Project aims to have all 30 members in each women-led group equipped with energy-saving stoves in their homes by January 30th, 2024. The initiative emphasizes timely materials sharing, follow-up activities, and fostering community collaboration. Monitoring and evaluation activities will ensure the quality of stove installations, address challenges, and document project impact.
Conclusion:
In the face of the formidable challenge that is climate change, Let’s Help International (LHI) emerges as a beacon of proactive commitment and transformative action. Recognizing the urgent interplay between climate issues and broader socio-economic challenges, LHI’s multifaceted approach to climate action underscores the organization’s unwavering dedication to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
