Introduction:
In the pursuit of creating a brighter future for refugee children in Uganda, Let’s Help International (LHI) is steadfast in its commitment to education. With Uganda hosting nearly 1.4 million refugees, the need for educational support is critical, especially for the 61 percent of these refugees who are children. Among the various challenges hindering access to education for these children are poverty, social neglect, and the traumatic experiences associated with forced displacement.
LHI’s Education Project in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement:
Executive Summary: Education is a powerful tool that shapes the future of children, but refugee children, unfortunately, face significant barriers. The Kyaka II Refugee Settlement is home to a population grappling with poverty and trauma, making it imperative to break the cycle through education. LHI’s initiative aims not only to enroll refugee children in school but also to provide the financial, material, and psycho-social support needed to ensure they complete primary education.
Addressing the Urgency:
Uganda’s education statistics paint a stark picture, with 600,000 refugee and host community children still out of school. The consequences of not intervening are severe, leading to a potential future of poverty, substance abuse, criminal activity, and prostitution for these vulnerable children.
The Role of Little by Little Education Services:
Currently partnering with LHI, Little by Little Education Services is actively contributing to the Digital Inclusion Initiative. This initiative focuses on educating refugees in digital literacy, equipping them with essential skills for the modern world.
In January 2024, Little by Little will extend its support by initiating a program to help 65 children attend school in Kyaka II. The comprehensive support includes tuition fees, uniforms, shoes, supplies, and the valuable addition of a case manager who will monitor the children and conduct home visits.
The Urgency of Education in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement:
The Kyaka II Needs Assessment Report, published by Save the Children in 2018, underscores the dire situation in the settlement. With over 29,925 refugees, 60% of whom are children, the report highlights the gaps in education and child protection services. Only 18.1% of primary-aged children attend school, and the challenges include financial constraints, inadequate schools, and long distances.
LHI’s Project Goals and Objectives:
LHI’s program aims to increase the education level of 70 children in Kyaka II each year for seven years. This involves comprehensive support, including school fees, uniforms, and psycho-social assistance. The goal is not merely enrollment but ensuring that these children complete their primary education, laying a strong foundation for their future.
Call to Action:
While LHI and Little by Little Education Services are making commendable efforts, the need is vast. We call on other partners, donors, and supporters to join hands in this crucial mission. By supporting education, we contribute not only to individual lives but also to the well-being and prosperity of communities. Together, we can break the cycle of poverty and empower refugee children to build a better tomorrow. Join us in making education a reality for every child in Uganda.
