Empowering Communities: LHI and Equal Aqua Uganda Join Forces in WASH Initiative
Introduction:
In a significant stride towards enhancing Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) standards, Let’s Help International (LHI) is excited to announce a groundbreaking partnership with Equal Aqua Uganda (EAU). Building on years of collaborative efforts, LHI and EAU are launching a WASH initiative that aims to address critical infrastructure needs in four schools within the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement and the host community. This joint endeavor is set to create a healthier and more hygienic learning environment for students.
Project Overview:
Objective:
The core objective of this initiative is to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities in selected schools, fostering a conducive environment for learning and growth.
Key Components:
1. Construction of Water Tanks:
– Utilizing recycled plastic bottles to create sustainable and visually impactful water tanks.
– Promoting awareness about plastic pollution while providing a reliable water source.
2. Installation of Latrines:
– Angels Care School: Construction of a pit latrine.
– Kakoni Grace Day and Boarding School: Construction of a pit latrine and a 10,000-liter water tank.
– Additional support for the construction of a pit latrine at Kakoni Grace School.
Project Timeline:
Commencing on November 13, 2023, the project is slated to conclude by the end of this year.
Methodology:
Construction Materials and Techniques:
– Interlocking Stabilised Soil Bricks (ISSB) & Ecobrick for Latrines:
– Environmentally friendly construction materials with a low carbon footprint.
– ISSBs replace traditional bricks, promoting sustainability and reducing deforestation.
– Inclusive design for all students, including those with special needs.
Ecobrick Water Tanks:
– Upcycled plastic bottles filled with sand for durability.
– Cost-effective, long-lasting, and environmentally conscious.
