Celebrating 90 Graduates: Empowering Refugee Women-led Businesses in Kyaka II

On September 26th, 2024, Let’s Help International (LHI) proudly celebrated the graduation of 90 inspiring women from the Digital Empowerment for Refugee Women-led Businesses project in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, Uganda. This project, funded by UNHCR Innovation, aimed to equip refugee women entrepreneurs with essential digital skills to enhance their businesses and contribute to the economic and social development of their communities.

Project Overview

Let’s Help International (LHI), selected from over 300 global applicants, was entrusted to implement this life-changing project, which officially launched on May 29th, 2024. With a funding of UGX 45,072,003 from UNHCR Innovation, LHI established a computer training center equipped with 10 computers, training materials, childcare services, and daily transport refunds to ensure the full participation of the women involved.

Participants received training in topics like:

  • Introduction to computers
  • Social media usage and protection
  • Report and grant proposal writing
  • Conducting online meetings

Community Impact

The impact of this training goes beyond individual growth. Many participants are now sharing their newfound digital knowledge with their communities, and local businesses and organizations are integrating these practices to improve their operations. For example, Odile Nkurunziza, Chairperson of Upendo Safi, shared how the training enabled her to connect with potential supporters through LinkedIn and elevated the visibility of her business on social media.

Graduation Ceremony

The graduation ceremony on September 26th saw representatives from UNHCR, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Kyegegwa District Local Government, and Refugee Welfare Council III honor the hard work of these women. Certificates of acknowledgment were handed over to key partners, and virtual remarks were delivered by UNHCR Innovation Services from Geneva and the East and Horn of Africa.

A Bright Future Ahead

LHI remains committed to supporting the ongoing journey of these graduates. Beyond the training, the center will continue to serve the wider community by providing internet access, online services, and more, benefiting over 141,000 refugees and host community members. We also continue to advocate for additional resources and stronger partnerships to ensure that refugee-led businesses continue to thrive.
