Deborah is the seventh child in a family of seven siblings, born to Congolese parents. Her mother was the second wife of her father, who had three wives. Due to insecurity in Congo, her mother fled with her children, separating from her husband, and they found refuge in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement in Uganda. Life is difficult for Deborah, as her mother struggles to provide for the family. Deborah shares, “When my mother and siblings go to look for work to buy food, we often spend the day with an empty stomach, and I fail to study.” This harsh reality affects her education, which worries her because it could prevent her from achieving her dream of becoming a doctor. Deborah believes that if her mother could start a small business, she would be able to send her to a better school and provide for the family, allowing her to focus on her studies and reach her goals.
